Fireman reveals why children should always sleep with bedroom door closed | World News

A firefighter has revealed why children should sleep with their bedroom doors closed at night.

While many children like sleeping with their door slightly ajar, ex-chief James Felton Jr warned how simply shutting doors could save lives in the event of a house fire.

In a viral post on Cold Harbor Spring Fire Department’s Facebook page, he shared two images of bedroom doors showing what the impact of a fire can have depending on whether it is shut or open.

In one picture, the door is blackened from the heat of a fire out on the landing, while the other shows inside the bedroom where the door remains white and virtually untouched.

“If this were an occupied bedroom the closed door could have saved a life,” the post read.

Mr Felton Jr wrote: “As a parent it’s hard to convince little kids to sleep with the door closed, they always want it open just a little.

“I do a lot of fire prevention at schools, so one thing I try and stress to the kids is, how important it is to sleep with the doors closed.”

He told Sky News that it is important to keep doors closed to keep any smoke and eventually fire out of the room if it progresses.

He said: “It is also important to have smoke detectors in every bedroom and common areas like hallways and kitchen.

“I teach a lot of fire safety classes with young kids and stress the importance of keeping the door closed.”

He added: “Kids can be scared of the dark and it’s not always easy, but another thing I talk about is fire drills in the home.

“All schools do them, so why not your home? I have them pick a meeting spot outside of the house like a tree or mailbox.”

Mr Felton’s post has since gone viral and has received thousands of shares and comments from across the world.

One person commented: “Maybe we need to start closing the bedroom doors at night.”

Another said: “Very important information to teach your kids….lifesaving home safety!”
