With shrill whistles Borussia Dortmund’s footballers were adopted by their offended fans from last season – they were greeted with frenetic applause on Sunday evening just before the kickoff. But who thought, a summer break with a change of coach just heal all wounds, which only had to wait 31 seconds. After half a minute, RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen kicked the ball with a hoe into Dortmund’s penalty area, where Jean-Kevin Augustin pushed him past goalkeeper Roman Bürki into the net. That was a capital false start of the BVB into the season with the new coach Lucien Favre.
The good thing about a false start in the first minute of the game is that you have an extra hour and a half to correct your entry into the game. The Dortmund needed only one half. It was already 3: 1 for the break – and in the end even 4: 1. As in the Fürth Cup, they turned a backlog into a win, and again the Belgian Axel Witsel was the man of the game, not only because of his 3-1 draw, but also as an outstanding player on the pitch. In added time Marco Reus even managed the icing: with the fourth goal he secured the sole championship lead in front of Bayern.
Witsel plays for BVB, Götze is sitting on the bench
Favre Witsel (for Mario Götze) and Maximilian Philipp (for Marius Wolf) brought new players to the starting eleven after a tough 2-1 victory in Fürth. Witsel played the central defensive six before the defense, Thomas Delaney and Mahmoud Dahoud acted before on the offensive half positions. Marco Reus played left wing and Philipp as a center forward on the position for which the BVB wants to undertake a 1A solution with the Spaniard Francisco Alcacer from FC Barcelona. But even without Alcacer were on Sunday eleven Dortmund football professionals not in the Bundesliga squad. Only eleven start and seven substitutes may be named. Five professionals played with the second team fourth league in East Westphalian Wiedenbrück, six wore on Sunday no football matters, including Nuri Sahin, Ömer Toprak and Shinji Kagawa.
Ralf Rangnick also has a large selection at RB Leipzig. His team had before this first league season game in Dortmund already six official games under his belt, there were 26 players used. Of the most used players this time, Willi Orban, Matheus Cunha, Stefan Ilsanker and Bruma did not make it into the starting lineup. Timo Werner also took first place on the bench. In this duel between Dortmund and Leipzig was easy to see how difficult it can be even for seasoned professionals to reach the field in the Bundesliga.
The eleven Dortmundern did not make the first minutes much fun. It then took 20 minutes after the 31-second shock before they appeared dangerous with Delaney and Reus scoring in front of the Leipzig goal. In the 21st minute, left-back Marcel Schmelzer sent a cross to the penalty spot where Dahoud, of all people, hit the ball undisturbed and headed in a 1: 1 equalizer. Since common Gladbach times Favre is a big fan of Dahoud, he has let play through him in the cup match in Fürth despite a wall performance and he has brought him back against Leipzig in the starting eleven. Dahoud thanked him in his own way.
Bürki saves BVB from another goal
It was a crisp, an action-packed game. Leipzig shocked Dortmund several times with actually deadly flat passes in the back of the defense. Bürki saves in the 28th minute just against Augustin. The Dortmund got their next chance only when they got a free kick in the 40th minute just before the penalty area. The cross from Reus extended Marcel Sabitzer into his own goal. But that was not the final humiliation for brave Leipzig before the break. After a corner from Christian Pulisic and a header from Delaney Witsel drove the rebound of the goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi in the 43rd minute by a spectacular side shot into the net. The 3-1 was the curious break of a somehow very different first half.
Bürki saved his BVB in the 50th minute with another Glanztat before the second goal, as he boxed a volley from Lukas Klostermann away. The Leipzig struggled, appeared three days after the Europa League game in Luhansk / Ukraine and four days before the second leg slightly tired. Dahoud had to increase in the 57th minute to 4: 1, this took over later Marco Reus, who provided with a lightning account for the final.
