Up to 40 inches of rain have been forecast in areas of the US east coast bracing for Hurricane Florence, officials have warned.
Speaking about the Wilmington area and its surrounding beaches in North Carolina, a Federal Emergency Management Agency official said: “The inland flooding threat is extreme, 15 to 25 inches of rain is forecast with up to 40 inches near the exact centre of Florence.”
He added: “There’s a large area forecast of 10 inches of rain or more across much of the state of North Carolina.”
He said the hurricane was then expected to spread out into the Central Appalachians, the Tennessee Valley, and southeastern parts of the US after Saturday.
The emergency body warned people in those surrounding areas to “remain vigilant” and expect flash floods at the start of next week.
